Starting from Overweight…Depressed...Unmotivated & Unfulfilled. I took the long way round to leading my best life and it shaped my mission to help others lead theirs.

Where to start…?

My name would be a good place I guess! I’m Philip Fitzgibbons. Most people know me as Phil. I’m an Essex boy, born and bred (please don’t hold that against me) and I live in Upminster with my wife Amy, two sons Joshua and Oliver and my little rascal of a dog Buzz.

To better understand me now, you have to know my past, both the good and not so good! I have always been an active kind of guy, always enjoyed the gym, playing sports and the great outdoors. However like so many, as I entered my mid twenties, work, and everything that goes with it, started taking over… I didn’t really notice it, it just slowly happened over time. I haven’t always been a personal trainer… believe it or not I used to wear a suit to work every day for my job in London, hard to imagine now, I know!

Jump forward a few years and I’m happily married, doing well at work and I have my first son. GREAT! Right? Well on paper yes! Everything was going as “planned” but I wasn’t passionate about my work and I seemed to spend all my time doing it. My physical and mental health was at an all time low… I weighed over 15stone, my asthma was getting worse and I was miserable, but I couldn’t seem to snap out of it and DO SOMETHING!

Then it happened… One morning I just refused to get out of bed and took a sick day, the next day the same and the day after that… 6 weeks later after seeking some help (never be afraid to speak to someone) I made it back to work. During my time off I had started to focus on my health and fitness again and started to see real improvements, for a while at least.

Jump forwards in time and I had changed my job, had my second son and was in a much better place mentally. I still wasn’t happy professionally though and I was still unfit and overweight. My wife booked me some personal training sessions for my birthday, that got me outdoors and a switch was flipped in my head, the weight started to come off, I was getting fitter and my energy and focus improved, even the asthma that had been increasingly bothering me for the past few years started to subside. I got into much better habits and I started to feel confident that I would never let myself feel like that again.

My eldest son (he was 5 at the time) was talking to me about what he should do when he grows up. My answer! “It doesn’t matter what you do as long as it makes you happy and you are passionate about it. If you are passionate about what you do then you have the best chance of being successful at whatever you choose”. I turned to my wife and told her that I was a hypocrite. How could I give my son that advice but show him something totally different in my actions… The rest, as they say, is history. I retrained as a personal trainer and left my job.

I started the Fitz Squad Bootcamp to encourage people to get outdoors and active, to help them get fitter, healthier and happier, training within a supportive community of friends where there is no judgement or expectation…. IT’S YOU vs YOU!
